A Project of the Town of Brookhaven
Overview

The steady degradation of the Forge River from inputs of manmade pollutants has resulted in a serious loss of water quality and a designation as an “impaired water body.”

The Forge River regularly experiences episodes of hypoxia (inadequate oxygen), resulting in fish kills, noxious odors, and the loss of marine-related businesses, recreation and tourism. While the Forge River has been the subject of numerous studies on the causes and status of the river’s degradation, this Watershed Plan is a critical step in consolidating existing information and combining this wealth of historic and scientific knowledge into a workable plan for the river’s restoration.

Cameron Engineering & Associates, LLP and CH2M HILLresponded successfully to a Request for Proposals issued by the Town of Brookhaven. Dr. Jeffrey Levinton of SUNY at Stony Brook’s Department of Ecology and Evolution will assist as scientific advisor. The project is funded by the New York State Department of State Division of Coastal Resources with funds provided under Title 11 of the Environmental Protection Fund and is under the direction of the Town’s Department of Environmental Protection & Land Management.
